F.D.N.Y. On September 11, 343 firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty. For their heroic efforts after the terrorist attacks on the WTC the N.Y. firemen received the Men Of The Year Award 2001.

The tragic events of September 11 in New York have dramatically changed our lives forever. The vivid pictures of the burning buildings and people desperate to get out are images that no one can ever forget.

Yet amongst all this tragedy there was hope and fortitude: Men and woman who despite the obvious danger to themselves were intent on helping others. They braved the flames, the  smoke, the heat and the crumbling buildings to get to the trapped and wounded and many were saved by these courageous individuals who prevented an even greater tragedy from occurring. Yet this bravery was not without cost. 343 New York City firefighters lost their lives trying to save others. Yet somehow in the devastation all around they managed to save thousands of lives.

Sir Paul paid his respect. Paul McCartney gave the poignant laudation for the Men Of The Year and provided Chief Jonas with a special thrill.

They are men who are accustomed to danger in their daily lives. It’s their job they say. But for once millions could see the true grit of these valiant men as they rushed to the aid of others. They are men like Batallion Chief Jay Jonas, men with families, men whose job it is to deal with adversity no matter how difficult or impossible the odds seem.

They do not seek gratitude for the work they do, yet they deserve our greatest respect for their daily tribulations. The New York City Fire Department showed the world the finest characteristics of mankind in the 21st century. In one of America’s darkest hours these fine men were like a beacon of hope for all those shocked by the horrible events unfolding.
